University of Maryland Eastern Shore Chooses META Teletherapy to Provide Counseling to Students

BUFFALO GROVE, IL – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), a historically black public university in Princess Anne, Maryland is the latest institution to partner with META Teletherapy, the leading mental health platform for schools, to bring safe, accessible counseling services to their students. The partnership with META was made possible through a grant managed by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. While in the META app, UMES students can search META’s nationwide network of licensed and vetted mental health providers, including counselors, therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists. Student can narrow their search by a variety of provider characteristics, such as gender, therapy style, ethnicity, and language, so that students can select a provider they feel comfortable working with.

Widely regarded as one of the top HBCUs in the nation, UMES offers undergraduate degrees in 38 disciplines and another 16 distinctive graduate programs. “We serve a diverse student body representing nearly three dozen nations,” said Heidi M. Anderson, President of UMES. “Because of this, we are proud to work with META, which connects our students to a broad range providers who reflect their cultural background.”

Students download the META app, choose a counselor, and receive chat, video, or voice counseling through the privacy and convenience of their smartphones. The app presents available online counselors for immediate connection, or students can leave a chat or voice message to schedule a future session.

On top of the common stress over earning an advanced degree, mental health issues are on the rise resulting from anxiety over the coronavirus pandemic. A recent survey from Mental Health America found that, from January to September 2020, the number of U.S. adults struggling with anxiety increased a staggering 93 percent over the same period in 2019.

By partnering with META, UMES receives a robust mental health program, complete with self-service content directed at students and an ongoing awareness campaign encouraging students to take care of their emotional and mental well-being.
