Hampton University Offering Online Counseling Platform through META Teletherapy

Hampton University, a private historically Black university in Hampton, Virginia, has partnered with META Teletherapy, the leading mental health platform for schools, to expand counseling services for Hampton University students. Through a partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and META, Hampton University students can access teletherapy services from the safety and privacy of their mobile phone. With the META app, Hampton University students can connect with Hampton’s campus counselors or choose a different therapist from META’s nationwide network of licensed and vetted mental health providers and licensed counselors. Students download the META app, choose a counselor, and receive chat, video, or voice counseling through the privacy and convenience of their smartphones. The app presents available online counselors for immediate connection, or students can leave a chat or voice message to schedule a future session.

“META will help us address the growing demand for accessible counseling services,” said Director of Hampton’s Student Counseling Center, Dr. Kristie Norwood. “Thanks to META and the TMCF, our students will be able to reach a counselor of their choice from the comfort of their home.”

META enables students to filter providers by a variety of characteristics, such as gender, ethnicity, therapy style, and language, so that students can choose a provider they feel comfortable working with. They also can connect with providers available on evenings and weekends to accommodate a college student’s schedule.

By partnering with META, Hampton University receives a robust mental health program, complete with self-service content directed at students and an ongoing awareness campaign encouraging students to take care of their emotional and mental well-being.
