South Carolina State University Partners with META Teletherapy to Provide Mental Health Counseling to Students

BUFFALO GROVE, IL – South Carolina State University has partnered with META Teletherapy, the leading mental health platform for schools, to expand counseling services for all SC State students.

Through a partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and META, SC State students can access teletherapy services from the safety and privacy of their mobile phone. While in the META app, students can connect with licensed mental health providers from META’s nationwide network of vetted professionals, including counselors, therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists.

“As a member of Thurgood Marshall College Fund, this partnership with META will ensure our students’ mental health wellbeing and enrich the resources available to students who are adjusting to virtual learning in a global pandemic. With META’s cloud-service, our students will have access to services on and off campus,” said SC State University President James E. Clark.

The META app is available to all students on Android and iOS devices. Once downloaded, students choose a counselor, and receive chat, video, or voice counseling through the privacy and convenience of their smartphones. The app presents available online counselors for immediate connection, or students can leave a chat or voice message to schedule a future session. META enables students to filter providers by a variety of characteristics, such as gender, therapy style, and language, so that students can choose a provider they feel comfortable working with. The app is also entirely private and secure. Student data and information is not shared with third parties.

According to a study done by The Healthy Minds Network in the spring, sixty percent of college students indicated that the pandemic has made it more difficult to access mental health care. In addition to making the META app available to all students, the TMCF grant includes a student support fund to pay for counseling sessions for SC State students facing financial hardship. META also manages ongoing marketing student campaigns promoting mental wellness and aims to end the stigma around receiving counseling.
